Statistics released by CIPA (Camera and Imaging Products Association of Japan) show that total number of shipments of digital cameras dropped by 20% year-on-year in January.
Mirrorless Interchangeable Lens camera shipments jumped by 22% especially in global markets gaining 31% in unit and 62% in value. Compact camera shipments outside of Japan have dropped by 30% whereas shipments to the Japanese market have decreased by 14% in unit and 20% in value.
Region-wise, mirrorless camera shipments to Europe and Asia surged by 44% and 60% respectively whereas to Americas, shipments plummeted by 43%. D-SLR shipments to Europe were favourable with 20% increase in unit and 14% drop in value. D-SLR shipments to Americas reduced by 41% and 54% in volume and value respectively. It has been estimated that generally after the shopping season, number of shipments tend to drop.
